Environmental Issues

FISHFAD'S contributing:
The Sustainability of Species involving Recreational and Commercial Fishing.

More than 3.5 million Australians regularly fish for recreation and sport. Fishing is one of the most popular recreational and sporting activities in Australia. About one in every five Australians enjoy fishing and one of every two Australian households owns fishing tackle. People of all ages and from all walks of life enjoy fishing.

It has long been recognized that the enormous popularity of recreational fishing can contribute to the decline of fish stocks or could contribute to the destruction of vital fish habitat. Fish fad was founded in 1981 and has always represented the interests of both the recreational anglers and all aspects that our fishing has on the Bio-mass and species available for our anglers. Recognition of the need for more sustainable fishing practices and a national standard for recreational fishing led to the development of a National Code of Practice, and the development of the National Tagging Program. The National Code of Practice is voluntary and addresses four main areas of fishing responsibility. These Include: looking after our fisheries, protecting the environment, treating fish humanely and respecting the rights of others.

The deployment of our Fish fad’s and the ongoing program to maintain these devices is our commitment to the future All anglers must "Look after our Fishery” for a sustainable future, and for our Children. Fad's work in a mysterious way by attracting most of the pelagic species. There is no known reason why species are attracted to the area around Fad's, but this fact has been recognized for hundreds of years. Provided we look after our stocks and don't over fish the Fad's, or fishing future will just get better.

Although you may be the owners of these devices they are for the benefit of all Anglers and as our (COP) outline for the sustainability of the fish stocks. By having a reliable source of pelagic edible species that can be attracted and caught in the general area of the Fad's, we are also taking pressure off the more pressured species. This we foresee is a great way of allowing these to recover and multiply.

Our Fad's have been deployed throughout Australia including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We have been instrumental in successfully assisting many Clubs in applications for Federal and State Government Grant's. Today Queensland is served by the highest concentration of FAD's in Australian Waters. Fish fad’s are now able to sustain and capture the many species that for such a long time have simply traveled past our door to be consumed into the Pacific Ocean food chain.

Provided the Fad's and our fellow anglers are treated with the respect they each individually deserve, Fishfad's will provide an endless supply of the highest quality food for many years to come.
